Progress is Possible

Keep Hoping! You Really are Progressing!

Progressing Out of Abuse into Peace

Who doesn't adore something about the beach? Whether you're a land aficionado or a water enthusiast, a sun seeker or a shade dweller, the ocean's shores offer delights for all. One memorable day, when my children were small, we enjoyed a day at the beach. While they busied themselves digging trenches around sandcastles and capturing hermit crabs, I basked nearby, relishing the unusual warmth of the Alaskan sun. Soon enough, I found myself entranced by the ebb and flow of the ocean waves. The tranquil sounds and refreshing sea breeze lulled me into a much-needed state of relaxation. Lost in contemplation about life's uncertainties, I compared the constant churn of chores (like laundry and dishes) to the ceaseless rhythm of the waves … always moving, but never progressing.

How Do I Know if I’m Progressing?

Caught up in my thoughts, I was surprised when the incoming tide brushed against my toes. When did the tide rise? I had been so absorbed in the waves' rhythm that I hadn't noticed the gradual movement of the tide. It was a moment of realization, an "aha" moment. Perhaps, I mused, progress was being made after all.

Safety and Healing from Trauma

Recovery from abuse and trauma mirrors the ocean's waves and tides: forward, backward... a constant motion that may not seem like progress at first glance. Yet, in a moment of clarity, we're astonished at how far we've truly come. The life lesson for me? Set aside discouragement and expectations.

Trust the Recovery Process

Trust the recovery process, and anchor your hope in the truth that intentional action will, over time, lead to healing. Just as you can't really see the tide rising, minute by minute,  you may not see the daily progress of recovery. But it's happening. I promise.
